Pair of Arts and Crafts Stools by Gordon Russell

England 1924

The stools are constructed with well patinated oak. Each stool comprises an octagonal support to each corner joined by horizontal chamfered stretchers and vertical X shaped stretchers front and back. The pigskin seats are tied with strapwork and fastened by decorative studs to each side.

These highly appealing stools are among Sir Gordon Russell’s earliest work. Born in 1892 Gordon Russell was a pioneer of combining modern machinery with skilled English cabinet work and design. In 1955 he was awarded a knighthood for his services to design. In 1988 the Gordon Russell Design Museum was established in the original Gordon Russell workshop in Broadway
