Adam and Hepplewhite Period Mahogany and Fustic Side Table

The demi-lune wildly figured Fustic top bordered by a continuous narrow boxwood strung rosewood band. The frieze with similar rosewood banded and boxwood stringing bordering rectangular panels which in turn enclose further shaped panels. The frieze divided by moulded capitals above four ring- collared, in curved and out curved tapering reeded legs terminating in circular capped feet.
This beautiful table, with its wonderfully preserved patina and restrained decoration is the epitomy of late 18th century elegance.
Provenance:
The distinctive leg with its shaped top is related to designs found in several of the Adam designed projects and in particular Croome Court for the Earl of Coventry.
A mahogany night table and commode with similar leg designs were supplied by Mayhew and Ince to Croome Court, presumably at the behest of Robert Adam,
The present table was acquired from a private collection in Worcester. Accordingly, it is not difficult to imagine that this table was acquired in 1948 at the auction of the contents of the nearby Croome Court.
